History

The Little Library program started in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led book-exchange boxes.

Our vision is to have a Little Library in every community and a book for every reader. We believe all people are empowered when the opportunity to discover a personally relevant book to read is not limited by time, space, or privilege.

I’m Melia Richards. My family loves to read and there was no library in Millville, and that’s what started this project.

Did you know that over 30 million adults in the United States can’t read or write above a third-grade level? It’s a real issue, especially for kids growing up in low-income families who often don’t have any books at home.

Studies have shown that having books around kids can make a big difference in their reading skills. The more books they have access to, the more likely they are to become strong readers.

By exchanging books each year, I hope to make a huge impact on giving people of all ages and backgrounds better access to books in Millville!
